Are Bulk Bags Waterproof?

Posted on - 21st May 2020

Bulk bags from Centurion Packaging are one of the most versatile bulk containers on the market today. No matter what sort of product you are storing or transporting, we will more than likely have a bag to fit your requirements.

We are often asked by our customers if FIBCs are watertight, which is the reason we are going to explore this topic in this blog.

Bulk Containers and Their Properties

There is plenty of unreliable information around about flexible bulk containers being waterproof, but in fact, they are not. FIBC bulk bags are manufactured from woven polypropylene and the woven fabric itself is not watertight or waterproof.

Some bulk bags are coated with polypropylene laminate which can be based on the inside of the bag or the outside - or both. This laminate does not make FIBCs waterproof or watertight, shattering a common misconception. Polypropylene lamination can act as a sufficient moisture barrier and reduce fine material leakages but this does not make it waterproof.

Can Bulk Bags Be Manufactured to be Waterproof?

Bulk bags can not be manufactured to be waterproof or watertight, but there are a number of options available to help you to limit moisture and product leakage. Bulk containers can be fitted with an internal polythylene liner, which is commonly known as a poly liner. These are flexible plastic liners specifically designed to line the inside of the bag. This will add more of a leakage barrier but does not make it 100% waterproof.

The other option is a specific type of liner called 'liquid liners', which are a form fit liner that is used for transporting products such as juice and chemicals. These liners are cube-shaped to ensure they will fit the container and reduce the product getting caught in the liner folds. Although a great option, they will not make your bag completely waterproof or watertight.
